Primarily letters (1847-1863) from Hatch to his father, Moses Porter Hatch, and to his sister, Elizabeth Hatch, relating to his military career under General Zachary Taylor in campaigns along the Rio Grande (1845-1846), as an officer of the 3rd Regt. of Infantry, at the capture of Veracruz and Mexico City under General Winfield Scott in the Mounted Rifle Regiment, on recruiting duty in Cleveland, particularly his service (1851-1861) in the Indian campaigns against the Navajos and Gila Apaches in Texas and New Mexico. Ca. 20 letters concern Hatch's service as chief of cavalry of the V Army Corps under Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks in operations in the Shenandoah Valley (March-Aug. 1862). The letters concern personal affairs, military matters, civil-military relations, the countryside and its climate, and the hardships of frontier service with long separations from wife, Adelaide Goldsmith Burckle Hatch. Includes a few special orders.
